How to turn this into a shortlist
- Pick three names that sell in your state.
- Ask each for a quote for your home with the same plan level.
- Ask each for the sample contract and the administrator’s name.
- Read the exclusions, the caps and the claims steps before the price.
- Check each company’s record with your state attorney general and the Better Business Bureau.
Why the labels differ
NerdWallet weights pricing at 30% and customer ratings at 15%. ConsumerAffairs scores verified reviews and plan details and adjusts the weights for each award. Money.com looks at services, claims processing, cost, availability and legal actions. Some outlets say they earn commissions or have partners, so a label tells you how one outlet weighed things, not how a plan will treat your home.
