Air conditioning

Cooling systems work hardest in hot and humid climates, which makes them one of the most common reasons homeowners look at a plan. A central system has an outdoor unit, an indoor coil, a blower and the ductwork between them. Plans differ on which of those parts they cover.

What this covers on many plans

  • Compressor and condenser coil
  • Evaporator coil
  • Blower motor and fan motors
  • Capacitors, contactors and control boards
  • Thermostat
  • Refrigerant leak repair, often with a cap

What usually causes these failures

  • Dirty coils and clogged filters that strain the system
  • Refrigerant leaks
  • Electrical parts such as capacitors wearing out
  • Clogged condensate drain lines
  • Age, especially in long cooling seasons

Often not covered

  • Window and portable units
  • Ductwork, on many plans, or only limited ductwork repairs
  • Capacity upgrades and work needed to meet current code
  • Refrigerant beyond the plan's limit
  • Damage from storms, freezing or flood
  • Failures tied to missing maintenance, such as unchanged filters
  • Problems that existed before coverage began

Questions to ask before you buy

  • Is there a limit on refrigerant, and how are leaks treated?
  • What does the plan do when a unit cannot be repaired, and what is the limit for replacement?
  • Is ductwork covered?
  • Does the plan expect proof of regular service?

Coverage depends on the plan you choose. The covered list, exclusions, limits and service fee in your contract decide what is paid. Ask for them in writing before you buy.
